As a business or public authority buyer, do you know that when you use newly manufactured print cartridges, you may be confronted with the new European Green Deal directives? DATE?
Article based on the text of the European Commission's Circular Economy Action Plan - Green Deal
The electrical and electronic equipment market
Electrical and electronic equipment is one of the largest waste streams in the EU, with a growth rate of 2% each year. 40% of electronic waste is recycled in the EU, which is still very low.
When an electrical product no longer works and cannot be repaired, it loses all its value, according to the European Commission "about two out of three Europeans would like to continue using their current digital devices longer, provided that their performance is not significantly affected", which is why measures will be put in place to democratise the reusability of products.
In order to respond to this need, the European Commission has presented an action in favour of sustainable development, the "Circular Electricity Initiative", the idea being to put in place measures to extend the life of products. For example for printing equipment, printers and consumables such as cartridges will also be concerned, unless the sector reaches an ambitious voluntary agreement in the coming months. (Voluntary agreement?)
The ambitions of the initiative :
- To design electrical products for total energy efficiency.
- To encourage the recycling and reuse of materials, to produce in accordance with the principle of circularity.
- Implement the right of repair and limit obsolescence for electrical and electronic products
- Implementation of an improvement in mobile phone ancillary products (e.g. charger and similar devices)
- Improving the collection and treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment
- Review EU rules on the restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products and provide guidance to improve consistency with relevant legislation, including REACH and ecodesign.
Take some time now to think about your next electrical and electronic purchases. Give priority to reuse and reconditioning.
